Eljara:
“People say civilization began…”
“…when someone discovered fire.”
Sean gently placed another piece of wood onto the dying campfire.
Sean:
“I don’t think so.”
She looked at him.
Eljara:
“No?”
He slowly shook his head.
Sean:
“Finding fire changes one night.”
A pause.
Sean:
“Keeping it alive…”
“…changes history.”
The tiny flames slowly grew stronger.
Eljara:
“How can one little fire change the world?”
Sean smiled.
Sean:
“Because tomorrow…”
“…someone wakes up warm.”
“…someone eats.”
“…someone survives.”
“…someone tells a story.”
“…and someday…”
“…someone dreams of a future that has never existed before.”
The fire crackled softly.
Eljara:
“So the campfire changed civilization?”
Sean looked into the dancing flames.
Sean:
“No.”
She frowned.
Eljara:
“No?”
His voice became almost a whisper.
Sean:
“The campfire was only the beginning.”
A long silence.
Sean:
“Civilization was built…”
“…by the people…”
“…who refused…”
“…to let it die.”
