Dozens of adventurers followed it without hesitation.

Mara:
“Do you think they’ll find treasure?”

Chibi:
“Probably.”

She smiled.

Mara:
“Then why aren’t we going?”

Chibi pointed toward an old stone lying beneath thick moss.

Chibi:
“May I ask you something?”

Mara:
“Always.”

He brushed the moss away.

Ancient letters slowly appeared.

THIS ROAD IS CLOSED.

Silence.

Mara:
“Why would anyone close a road?”

Chibi:
“That’s the interesting question.”

She looked back toward the crowd.

Nobody had even noticed the old stone.

Mara:
“They’re all following the new sign.”

Chibi:
“They are.”

Mara:
“They don’t know this one exists.”

He smiled sadly.

Chibi:
“No.”

Mara:
“So nobody warned them.”

The boy gently shook his head.

Chibi:
“They were warned.”

She frowned.

Mara:
“But nobody can read it anymore.”

The forest suddenly became very quiet.

Mara:
“Then the warning failed.”

Chibi:
“Did it?”

A pause.

Chibi:
“The stone remained.”

Another pause.

Chibi:
“The warning remained.”

He looked toward the forgotten milestone.

Chibi:
“We forgot how to listen.”

Laughter echoed from deep within the ruins.

Someone shouted.

“We’ve opened another chamber!”

More people hurried down the old road.

Mara:
“They’re only exploring.”

Chibi:
“I know.”

Mara:
“They don’t want to hurt anyone.”

He nodded.

Chibi:
“Neither did the first person…”

A long silence.

Chibi:
“…who ignored this stone.”

The wind moved gently through the ancient trees.

Mara:
“So this is where Chaos builds its roads.”

For the first time—

Chibi didn’t smile.

Chibi:
“No.”

Mara:
“No?”

He looked once more at the forgotten warning beneath the moss.

Chibi:
“Chaos doesn’t build new roads.”

Silence.

Chibi:
“It only waits…”

The voices from the ruins suddenly stopped.

Chibi:
“…until we forget why the old ones were closed.”
