“Do you know what people call this?”
Sean gestures toward the festival below.
Music.
Lanterns.
Bonfires.
Tables overflowing with food.
Thousands of people celebrating beneath the warm June sky.
Summer at its absolute best.
“Abundance.”
The word sounds beautiful.
Comforting.
Like a blessing.
The crowd cheers.
Another song begins.
Children run through fields of lantern light.
Couples dance beneath flower garlands.
Everything feels effortless.
Natural.
Deserved.
And perhaps that is why nobody asks questions.
“Questions about what?” Eljara asks.
Sean watches the feast.
“Where it came from.”
Silence.
The answer seems obvious.
Food comes from farms.
Wine comes from vineyards.
Music comes from musicians.
Simple.
Reasonable.
Comforting.
“That’s what every generation thinks.”
The bonfires ignite one by one.
Golden flames rising into the twilight.
The crowd moves closer.
Drawn toward warmth.
Toward light.
Toward each other.
“People know life is hard,” Eljara says.
“Of course they do.”
“Then why pretend otherwise?”
Sean watches the celebration.
Then quietly answers:
“Because nobody wants to stare at the bill during the feast.”
Silence.
The music continues.
The laughter continues.
The celebration continues.
Not false.
Not dishonest.
Simply incomplete.
Eljara looks across the valley.
The flowers.
The wine.
The music.
The fire.
“All of this is real.”
Sean nods.
“The joy.”
“The beauty.”
“The belonging.”
“It’s all real.”
Then she says:
“Which means the other side must be real too.”
Silence.
The drought.
The sacrifice.
The waiting.
The loss.
The hidden face beneath the smiling one.
Sean watches the nearest bonfire.
People dancing around it.
Celebrating the longest days of the year.
Then quietly says:
“Maybe that’s why old kings wore crowns.”
Eljara looks at him.
“Why?”
The firelight flickers across the valley.
The stars begin appearing overhead.
And Sean answers:
“Because somebody has to remember the cost.”
Silence.
The feast continues.
The beautiful face of summer shines brighter than ever.
And somewhere beyond the firelight—
the second face waits patiently.
Not evil.
Not cruel.
Simply waiting.
Because every blessing carries a debt.
And every feast is eventually followed by the reckoning.
