WHEN THE MACHINE NOTICES INTERRUPTION Delta Green — Mythveil Chronicles Week 1 · May / The Machine

“He’s gone.”

Sean keeps stirring his coffee.

“Yeah.”

One booth in the diner stays empty.

No cup.

No jacket.

No trace.

A cook disappeared three days ago.

Yet the kitchen still runs perfectly.

Orders arrive on time.

The grill sounds the same.

The movements behind the counter never break rhythm.

“They replaced him?” Eljara asks.

Sean looks toward the kitchen.

“They continued him.”

Silence.

A waitress refills their coffee.

Perfect timing.

Automatic smile.

Automatic nod.

For half a second—

her expression empties.

Then returns.

Professional.

Practiced.

“She didn’t hear me,” Eljara says quietly.

“No.”

“She responded.”

Outside, exhausted office workers move through the street.

Delivery trucks.

Transit crews.

Night shifts beginning.

Everyone tired.

Everyone continuing.

A truck passes outside.

Old city distribution logo beneath newer paint.

Too old to still exist.

Yet still operational.

“You’ve seen that before,” Eljara says.

Sean nods once.

“Different country.”

“Different decade.”

Another pause.

The kitchen behind them keeps moving.

No wasted motion.

No silence.

No interruption.

“It feels rehearsed,” she says.

Sean shakes his head slowly.

“No.”

“What then?”

He watches the workers behind the counter.

The speed.

The exhaustion.

The precision.

“It feels maintained.”

Silence.

A younger cook now stands where the missing man used to work.

Same timing.

Same rhythm.

Same motions.

Not imitation.

Continuation.

“He disappeared,” Eljara says quietly.

“Yeah.”

“And nothing changed.”

Sean looks out the diner window.

At the city.

The trains.

The hospitals.

The office towers.

The endless movement beneath fluorescent light.

“No,” he says softly.

“Something changed.”

Eljara watches him carefully.

“What?”

Sean stares into his coffee.

“The machine noticed.”

Silence.

“And it corrected the interruption.”

The kitchen keeps moving behind them.

Perfectly.

Without mourning.

Without hesitation.

Without ever needing to stop.
