🜍 TRICKSTER — WEEK 2 When the Game Decides Who You Are

“…Chibi?”

“Yeah?”

Mara watches the street.

“They’re doing it again.”

Chibi looks.

People move.

Too clean.

Too right.

“They got better,” he says.

Mara frowns.

“Games don’t do that.”

“This one does.”

A woman walks past them.

Nice coat.
Confident.

People don’t move for her.

Not enough.

She slows.

“…did you see that?” Mara whispers.

Chibi nods.

“She’s wrong.”

Mara looks at him.

“What do you mean?”

He points.

“Everyone else fits.”

A beat.

“She doesn’t.”

The woman reaches a door.

She tries to open it.

Nothing.

She tries again.

Still nothing.

“…it’s locked,” Mara says.

Chibi shakes his head.

“No.”

A pause.

“It’s not for her.”

Mara pulls her arms closer.

“That’s not how doors work.”

A man walks up behind the woman.

Worn jacket.
Wrong shoes.

He reaches for the same door.

It opens.

Easy.

Mara freezes.

“…no.”

The woman turns.

“Excuse me—”

The man walks inside.

The door closes.

Mara stares.

“That’s cheating.”

Chibi nods slowly.

“Yeah.”

“But no one’s stopping it.”

The woman knocks.

No response.

People pass her.

No one looks.

No one helps.

“…hello?” she says.

Her voice feels smaller.

Mara stands.

“That’s not fair.”

Chibi grabs her sleeve.

“Wait.”

“…why?”

“They’ll fix it.”

Mara frowns.

“How?”

A security guard walks by.

The woman steps toward him.

“There’s a problem—”

He keeps walking.

Past her.

Mara’s stomach tightens.

“…he didn’t hear her.”

Chibi shakes his head.

“He did.”

A pause.

“He just doesn’t think she matters.”

Mara looks back at the door.

“…what if it does that to us?”

Chibi looks down.

At their feet.

“It already is.”

Mara freezes.

“…what?”

He points.

Her step.

Just slightly wrong.

People pass closer.

Not hitting.

Not avoiding.

The space around her shrinks.

Mara steps back.

Everything snaps back.

Perfect.

“…it didn’t like that.”

Chibi nods.

“No.”

“It wants you to play right.”

Mara shakes her head.

“I don’t know the rules.”

Chibi looks at her.

“You don’t need to.”

A beat.

“It’ll teach you.”

Mara’s voice is small.

“I don’t want to play.”

Chibi looks at the street.

“…yeah.”

A pause.

“But it’s already your turn.”
