🜍 BIRTH — WEEK 3 (World of Darkness) Sean & Eljara When Growth Starts to Learn

The dock is gone.

Where broken wood had been two days ago, there is now only green — thick vines twisted into each other, swallowing everything beneath them.

Sean stops at the edge of the mud.

“It spread,” Eljara says.

Sean shakes his head slowly.

“No.”

He watches the surface carefully.

“It changed.”

At first, it looks like the same growth they saw before.

Dense.

Too fast.

Too much.

But then—

A vine tightens.

Not growing.

Moving.

Eljara narrows her eyes.

“You see that?”

“Yeah.”

They step closer.

The ground no longer sinks under their weight.

It holds.

Dense with roots.

Layered.

Structured.

Sean presses his boot into the surface.

The soil shifts.

Not collapsing.

Responding.

He freezes.

“Don’t move.”

Eljara stops.

“What?”

Sean doesn’t look up.

“It’s reacting.”

The pressure under his boot tightens slightly.

Then releases.

Slow.

Measured.

Like something decided not to respond.

Sean steps back.

“That wasn’t random.”

“No.”

“That was a choice.”

The swamp goes quiet for a moment.

Then louder than before.

Water moves.

Something large glides beneath the surface.

Eljara turns toward the bayou.

“You see that?”

Sean nods.

“Yeah.”

The vines near the water shift.

Turning.

Following the movement.

Not blindly.

Tracking.

Eljara exhales.

“That’s worse.”

Sean kneels and extends his knife toward one of the vines.

Just enough to touch it.

The reaction is instant.

The vine coils around the blade.

Fast.

Tight.

Pulling.

Sean jerks his hand back.

The movement spreads through the entire mass.

Vines tightening.

Roots shifting.

A ripple of tension running through everything at once.

Eljara steps back.

“Okay.”

“That’s new.”

Sean nods.

“Yeah.”

“That’s very new.”

The growth settles again.

But not the same way.

Not passive.

Not idle.

Waiting.

Eljara watches it carefully.

“That’s not just growth anymore.”

“No.”

“That’s behavior.”

Sean looks across the swamp.

Everything feels closer now.

Tighter.

Like the space itself is shrinking.

“It’s organizing,” he says.

Eljara shakes her head.

“The Wyld doesn’t organize.”

“No.”

“It expands.”

She looks back at the mass.

“But this…”

Sean finishes quietly:

“…learned something.”

The wind moves through the swamp.

Warm.

Heavy.

Full of life that doesn’t feel right anymore.

Eljara glances back one last time.

“You know what scares me?” she says.

Sean doesn’t turn.

“What?”

She watches the vines tighten slightly again.

“It’s not trying to grow anymore.”

Sean exhales slowly.

“No.”

“It’s trying to become something.”
