Spring always feels like a beginning.

At least that’s what people say.

Winter ends.
The days grow longer.
The first green shoots push through the soil.

Life returns.

But Mara has started to notice something strange about spring this year.

It doesn’t feel like the world is slowly waking up.

It feels like the world woke up all at once.

She sits by the apartment window with her knees pulled close, watching the street below.

Three days ago the trees were still bare.

Now they are covered in leaves.

Bright green.

Full.

Alive.

Too alive.

Chibi lies on the floor nearby, chin resting in his hands as he watches the same patch of grass outside the window.

“That wasn’t there yesterday,” he says.

Mara leans forward.

A small green shoot has pushed through the soil beside the sidewalk.

Actually — several shoots.

Tiny blades of grass growing close together like they appeared overnight.

“That’s spring,” she says.

Chibi tilts his head.

“Maybe.”

He keeps watching the grass carefully.

“Plants don’t usually grow that fast.”

Mara shrugs.

“They waited all winter.”

“Yeah,” he says.

“But this feels different.”

Outside, the park across the street hums with activity.

Birds swoop low across the trees.

Insects drift through the air like dust caught in sunlight.

A dog pulls its owner toward a patch of grass, digging excitedly at the soil.

Everything is moving.

Everything is feeding.

Everything is building.

The whole city feels restless.

Like something started a signal and the world is responding.

“Spring makes everything busy,” Mara says.

Chibi rolls onto his back and stares at the ceiling.

“That’s because spring is a message.”

She looks at him.

“What kind of message?”

He points toward the window.

“A signal.”

Mara frowns.

“From who?”

Chibi shrugs.

“Nature.”

She laughs softly.

“That’s not a person.”

“Doesn’t have to be.”

He sits up again and looks toward the trees outside.

“You know plants talk to each other, right?”

Mara blinks.

“Plants don’t talk.”

“They do.”

He draws lines on the carpet with his finger.

“Roots connect underground.”

“Through fungi.”

“They send signals.”

Warnings.

Nutrients.

Information.

Scientists call it the Wood Wide Web — a hidden network beneath forests and parks where trees communicate through fungal threads in the soil.

Mara stares at the grass outside the window.

“So the trees know things?”

“Yeah.”

“When insects come.”

“When to grow.”

“When the weather changes.”

She presses her hand lightly against the window.

“Do they know we’re here?”

Chibi watches the branches sway in the wind.

“I think they always did.”

Outside, a swarm of insects rises suddenly from the grass.

Not chaotic.

Coordinated.

Thousands of tiny wings moving together.

Then settling again.

Mara feels a strange shiver.

“Why is everything growing so fast?” she asks.

Chibi doesn’t answer right away.

Instead he studies the trees carefully.

Leaves rustling softly.

Branches moving in the wind.

Signals passing through roots and fungi beneath the ground.

“Maybe spring isn’t just waking things up,” he says quietly.

Mara turns toward him.

“What else would it do?”

Chibi smiles faintly.

“Maybe it reminds everything what it’s supposed to become.”

Mara looks back at the trees.

The leaves shimmer in the sunlight.

Thousands of tiny movements.

Thousands of signals.

And for a moment she feels something strange.

Not fear.

Not danger.

Just the quiet feeling that the world outside the window

is growing

faster than anyone expected.

And somewhere beneath the park

beneath the roots

beneath the hidden fungal network connecting every plant

a signal is spreading.

Not chaotic.

Not random.

Coordinated.

And more things are beginning

to listen.
