MASKS — WEEK 1 (PulpCthulhu WW2) Mara & Chibi
The game still feels like a game
They find the masks laid out on a table that wasn’t there yesterday.
Painted smiles. Paper crowns. Strings already knotted to the right length.
Mara touches one with a finger.
Mara
I like this one.
Chibi
That’s why it’s dangerous.
She lifts it, holding it up to the light.
Mara
It’s not scary.
Chibi
Exactly.
Around them, the street is louder than usual. Not noisy. Busy. Purposeful. Like everyone knows where they’re supposed to be.
Mara
Are we playing?
Chibi
Everyone is.
She puts the mask on. Just for a second.
Mara
When I wear it, people don’t look at me.
Chibi
They look at the part they’re allowed to see.
She tilts her head.
Mara
That feels nice.
Chibi
Quiet always does.
A group of adults passes by, laughing. Someone bumps into someone else. No apology. No anger. Just momentum.
Mara
I can say things like this.
Her voice sounds flatter. Not wrong. Just less hers.
Chibi
Because it’s not you saying them.
Mara
Then who is?
Chibi
The part that doesn’t get blamed.
She lowers the mask but keeps holding it.
Mara
When does the game stop?
Chibi
When a bell rings.
Mara
What if it doesn’t?
Chibi doesn’t answer right away.
They walk past chalk lines drawn on the street. Circles. Arrows. Numbers that don’t match.
Mara
Those rules are wrong.
Chibi
They’re not for kids.
Confetti drifts down, sticking to the ground like it plans to stay.
Mara
Why do grown-ups like this so much?
Chibi
Because it feels like choosing.
She puts the mask on again. Longer this time.
Mara
I don’t want to take it off.
Chibi looks at her. Really looks.
Chibi
That means it worked.
Mara
Worked how?
Chibi
It made the world simpler.
The bell rings.
Some people stop.
Some don’t.
Mara removes the mask and hugs it to her chest.
Mara
It knows my name.
Chibi
Most things do.
She places it back on the table, face down.
Mara
I want to play something else.
Chibi
Good.
Mara
With ponies.
Chibi grins.
Chibi
Ponies don’t follow rules.
They walk away as the celebration swells behind them.
The game doesn’t chase them.
It just waits.
