The Place We Learned to Stay (Tales of the Loop Country Road Kids inspired by Stranger Things)

The road ends where it always does.
Gravel thinning into dirt.
Trees leaning in, familiar instead of kind.

Sean stops the car without meaning to.

Eljara:
You know we don’t have to.

Sean:
I know.

They get out anyway.

The place hasn’t changed.
Or maybe it has — and they stopped asking when.

Sean rests his hand against the wood.

Sean:
I thought this place was holding people here.

Eljara shakes her head.

Eljara:
No.
They leaned on it.

She looks around. Not searching. Measuring.

Eljara:
When leaving hurts more than staying,
people give a place their weight.

Sean exhales.

Sean:
So it wasn’t time that trapped them.

Eljara:
No.

A pause.

Eljara:
It was the fear of what came after.

They stand there a moment longer than necessary.

Then Eljara steps back.

Eljara:
If we keep coming here, it becomes everything.

Sean nods.

Sean:
And everything else disappears.

They turn toward the car.

Not running.
Not relieved.

Just finished.

The place stays behind.

But it no longer carries the future for them.
