(Miami, 2089. Night. Neon slides across the ceiling like slow water.)
Chibi is sitting on the floor, wrapped in a sweater that is clearly not his size.
He lets the sleeves cover his hands on purpose.
Chibi:
I have monster arms.
Mara:
Monsters have claws.
Chibi:
Then I’m a soft monster.
Mara laughs and adjusts the little candle between them so it doesn’t tip over.
Chibi:
You keep fixing it.
Mara:
I like things standing straight.
Chibi:
What if time doesn’t?
Mara pauses. Then smiles.
Mara:
Time does whatever it wants.
Chibi crawls to the window and draws a shaky line into the fog.
It vanishes almost immediately.
Chibi:
Hey!
It ate my line.
Mara:
That happens.
Chibi:
Rude.
Outside, something pops far away. Chibi grins.
Chibi:
They keep saying it’s almost a new year.
Mara:
They say that every year.
Chibi:
Does the old one break?
Mara:
No.
Chibi:
That’s boring.
He flaps his sleeves.
Chibi:
So why do they care so much?
Mara:
Because it feels nice to think something starts new.
Chibi:
Like flipping your pillow.
Mara:
Yes.
Chibi:
But the pillow’s still warm.
Mara blinks. Then laughs.
Mara:
Yes.
It is.
Chibi leans closer to the candle.
Chibi:
Does time see us?
Mara:
I don’t think so.
Chibi:
Good.
Then it can’t stop me.
Mara gently nudges the candle farther away from him.
Mara:
Time keeps going.
Chibi:
Even if we don’t?
Mara:
Even then.
Chibi thinks for exactly one second.
Chibi:
Then years are just lines people draw.
Mara:
Yes.
Chibi:
With crayons?
Mara:
Sometimes.
Chibi nods, satisfied.
Chibi:
Okay.
I’ll draw better ones.
Midnight passes.
Nobody notices.
The candle keeps burning.
