They are not supposed to be awake.

The house knows it. The walls creak too carefully, and the clock in the hallway ticks with long pauses between each sound, as if it’s unsure whether the next second should be allowed.

Chibi sits on the floor, sleeves too long, a small circle of objects arranged with quiet precision. A flashlight that barely works. Three coins that don’t match. A folded paper with stars drawn in uneven lines. A glass of water nobody is allowed to touch.

Mara kneels nearby, close enough to feel part of it, careful enough not to break it.

Mara:
Is it happening yet?

Chibi tilts their head, listening to something that isn’t sound.

Chibi:
Not happening. It’s waiting.

Outside, a firework pops — too early, too loud. The water ripples, though the floor doesn’t shake.

Mara:
I don’t like the counting.

Chibi:
Neither does time.

They sit quietly while voices outside begin to rise, numbers shouted too fast and out of order.

Mara presses her hands flat against the carpet.

Mara:
What if it doesn’t turn right?

Chibi shrugs, gentle.

Chibi:
Then we stay awake.

The flashlight flickers and goes dark. For a moment, everything feels undecided.

Then the noise outside explodes — cheering, horns, fireworks.

Inside the room, nothing moves. The year hesitates — and then continues.

Mara lets out a breath she didn’t know she was holding.
