Okay.
Listen.
They always say the Rauhnächte are loud.
Storms.
Horses.
Hunting cries in the sky.
That’s wrong.
The sixth night is quiet.
In Bavaria, where we are,
they had a rule for this one.
You don’t count.
Not your money.
Not your animals.
Not your people.
You don’t say how many you have.
And you don’t check if they’re all still there.
Because numbers attract attention.
Old stories say that on this night,
things that shouldn’t be counted
start answering back.
Children were told not to play games with numbers.
No counting steps.
No counting stars.
No “how many sleeps until…”
Because something listens.
And it doesn’t like being reminded
that it’s missing one.
There’s a story from the Berchtesgadener Land.
A farmer who counted his cows
three times before bed.
Just to be sure.
In the morning,
the number was the same.
But one of them wouldn’t look at him anymore.
Didn’t run.
Didn’t panic.
Just stood there,
breathing slow,
as if it was waiting
for someone else to finish counting.
That’s why tonight,
you leave things vague.
You say “enough.”
You say “everyone’s here.”
You don’t make lists.
Because the sixth night isn’t about loss.
It’s about noticing
who answers
when you call.
…
Eljara.
Your turn.
Tell them what happens
when people start asking
who belongs
and who doesn’t.
🜍 Rauhnacht continues.
