In my family, the first Rauhnacht had one rule.
Never leave laundry outside.
Not a shirt.
Not a sleeve.
Not even a scrap of cloth.

My grandmother wasn’t superstitious.
She mocked horoscopes.
She trusted doctors.
But that night, she checked the line twice.

She said:
“If you give fabric to the Wild Hunt, they’ll take the body that wore it.”

I thought it was just a saying.

Until one winter, someone forgot a shirt.

No storm came that night.
No wind.
No snow.

But every dog in the village started howling at once.

In the morning, the shirt was still there.
Clean.
Folded.
Wet — as if someone had worn it.

The man it belonged to went out three days later to gather wood.
He came back.

But something was missing.

He worked.
He ate.
He nodded when spoken to.

At night, he stood barefoot in his yard, staring at the sky.
Listening.

When he died in spring, they found the shirt under his bed.
Frozen stiff.
With dirt packed into the hem.

Since then, my mother doesn’t explain anything.
She just takes the laundry inside.

And every year, on the first Rauhnacht,
she looks at me like she’s counting.
Like she’s making sure
I’m still here.
