â If sweetness could confess â would you still taste it twice?
The monastery kitchen smells of smoke, honey, and guilt.
Sean sits by the hearth, turning a small pastry in his hand â
a Zigerkrapfen, golden and perfect, steam curling from its seams like a whispered temptation.
Eljara watches him, stirring sandalwood into the milk.
âThey used to make these only for confession days,â she says softly.
âOne for the priest. One for the sinner.â
Sean chuckles, breaking it in half.
The scent hits him first â sweet cheese and spice, the kind of smell that forgives too easily.
He takes a bite.
Warmth spreads through his chest â but itâs not comfort.
Itâs remembrance.
Behind him, the wind sighs through the chapel door.
The candles flicker once,
then bend toward the table â
like something invisible is leaning close to breathe in the scent.
Eljara doesnât move.
She knows that feeling.
âDid you bless it?â she asks.
Sean shakes his head.
âI thought you did.â
The pastry on the plate is gone.
The air smells heavier now â butter and incense,
sweetness laced with something burnt.
From the wall, the old fresco of Saint Nicholas seems darker â
his painted eyes glistening, the gold leaf around them peeling as if wet.
The hearth cracks.
Ash stirs.
A faint handprint glows in the flour on the table.
Eljara whispers a prayer,
but the words sound older than Latin.
The kind the dough itself remembers.
Sean looks down at his fingers â
sticky, trembling â
and realizes the sugar isnât sugar at all.
Itâs salt.
â If the sin forgave you first â would you still finish the pastry?
