❓ If an echo followed you through every hallway — would you still turn around?
They arrive after dark, the mountains already closing in.
Val Sinestra sits between cliffs like a secret that regrets being kept.
Once a spa for the broken, now a hotel for the brave.
The locals told them the pipes sigh when no one showers,
and that every guest hears their name once — but only once — from behind the wrong door.
Stacy adjusts her scanner.
No signal, no warmth.
Just a low pulse under the floorboards, steady as a heartbeat.
“Old foundation,” she says.
Caelwyn only nods.
He’s watching the mirrors.
The reception hall smells of lavender and rust.
Every lamp burns softer than it should,
as if the light itself is afraid to wake something.
Room 203.
The key fits too easily.
Inside, the wallpaper peels in patterns that look like faces caught mid-breath.
Stacy kneels, pressing a thermal reader against the tiles.
“There’s movement,” she whispers. “But no heat.”
Caelwyn walks to the balcony.
Snow drifts sideways.
Down below, a single figure crosses the courtyard —
pale, thin, walking the same path over and over.
But the footprints stop halfway.
And the figure doesn’t.
Behind them, the corridor exhales.
Long. Slow. Almost kind.
Stacy turns off the scanner.
“What if the haunting isn’t memory,” she asks,
“but the building remembering us first?”
Caelwyn doesn’t answer.
The key in his hand turns warm.
And from somewhere deep inside the walls,
a woman’s voice whispers through the pipes:
“Welcome back.”
❓ If a house could dream — would you wake it, or let it finish remembering you?
