Delta Green · Celebration · Week 4 · When We Let Our Guard Down
CAELWYN: “How far away does danger have to be?”
STACY: “Wrong question.”
She looks through the window at the packed hall. Shoulder to shoulder. Strangers sharing benches. Hands on backs to squeeze past. Phones passed across tables for photographs.
STACY: “The distance hasn’t changed. The meaning of the distance has.”
In ordinary life, proximity can trigger caution. Celebration rewrites context. A stranger half a metre away on an empty street may matter. The same stranger pressed beside you during a chorus may not. That is not irrationality. It is social competence: humans read situations, intentions and belonging.
CAELWYN: “And something else can learn the same grammar.”
In Delta Green, that possibility cannot be dismissed because the Unnatural is real. But Stacy refuses the lazy explanation that alcohol simply makes people foolish.
STACY: “Opportunity isn’t mechanism.”
The mechanism may be permission: a place at the table, a shared refrain, an introduction nobody quite remembers, a face accepted because everyone else seems to accept it.
CAELWYN: “So it doesn’t need to imitate a person perfectly.”
STACY: “Perhaps not. It may only need us to complete the pattern.”
That is the unsettling possibility. Celebration does not destroy human judgement. It gives judgement a different job: not keeping everyone out, but deciding whom to let in.
CAELWYN: “And if the Unnatural understands belonging?”
STACY: “Then distance stops being a defence.”
AND WHAT DO YOU THINK?
If the same physical distance can mean danger in one setting and belonging in another, where does the real boundary between stranger and group actually exist?
