And that is precisely why the path is dangerous.
The soldier finds another enemy.
Then another.
Until even the people he once protected can stand in his way.
The medicae needs another experiment.
Until another life becomes the price of saving this one.
The scholar needs another answer.
Until another person’s secrets, body or mind become merely something to open.
The artist needs another improvement.
Until other people — and eventually their own body — become material.
The fire has not disappeared.
It has grown.
What disappeared was everything else’s right to matter.
Perhaps that is where love enters the equation.
Not to extinguish the fire.
Not to tell us not to fight, learn, heal or become more.
But to keep something outside our fire valuable enough that it cannot simply become fuel.
And that must include ourselves.
Because a fire that recognises nothing beyond itself will eventually burn everything around it.
And a fire that receives nothing from beyond itself will eventually begin to consume the person carrying it.
Your fire may be worth protecting.
