“Why are they all leaving?”
Mara watches the morning crowd disappear into the subway station.
Coffee cups.
Dark coats.
ID badges.
Nobody speaks much.
They just move.
Fast.
Like they already know where they belong.
Chibi sits nearby, watching the street.
“Because it’s morning.”
“That’s not what I mean.”
A train arrives below them.
The sound rises through the station like something enormous breathing under the city.
People descend immediately.
No hesitation.
No one even checks if the train is there.
They already trust it.
“They all do the same things,” Mara says quietly.
“Yeah.”
“Every day?”
“Mostly.”
Silence.
A tired office worker nearly drops his coffee.
His hand corrects automatically.
Perfectly.
Before he even notices the mistake.
“That looks exhausting.”
“Yeah.”
“Then why don’t they stop?”
Chibi tilts his head slightly.
“The city gets hungry.”
Mara looks at him.
“What does that mean?”
He gestures toward the streets.
The buses.
The subway.
The office towers disappearing into fog.
“All of this wakes up every morning,” he says quietly.
“And?”
“It needs people to move.”
Silence.
Another train arrives.
Another wave disappears underground.
Everything flowing.
Like blood through veins.
A woman near the station suddenly looks lost for half a second.
Empty.
Then her phone vibrates.
Immediately she starts moving again.
Fast.
Focused.
Certain.
“She remembered?” Mara asks.
“No.”
“What then?”
“She got direction.”
The crossing light changes.
The entire intersection moves at once.
Perfect timing.
Perfect rhythm.
No hesitation.
Mara watches silently.
At the movement.
The exhaustion.
The endless repetition.
And suddenly—
the city doesn’t feel built anymore.
It feels alive.
Not alive like an animal.
Alive like a process.
Something vast beneath the streets
waking every morning
and needing millions of people
to keep it breathing.
The subway rumbles beneath their feet again.
Deep.
Endless.
Hungry.
