THE MASK SETTLES Warhammer 30/40k – Week IV

The chamber feels familiar now.

That’s the problem.

Eljara:
I stopped noticing it yesterday.

Sean:
The movement?

She nods once.

Eljara:
It became background.

Sean plays a single note on the guitar.

The echo lands somewhere impossible.

Neither reacts.

That’s another problem.

Eljara:
At first everything felt wrong.

A pause.

Eljara:
Now it just feels normal.

Sean leans back slightly.

Sean:
That’s how masks work.

She turns toward him.

Eljara:
Meaning?

A quiet note hums through the chamber.

Sean:
At first they feel false.

A beat.

Sean:
Then you wear them long enough—

She finishes it softly.

Eljara:
—and eventually they become your face.

Silence settles comfortably between them.

That’s the worst part.

Eljara:
I thought awareness protected you.

Sean almost smiles.

Sean:
From what?

Eljara:
Becoming part of it.

A faint sound echoes overhead.

Almost laughter.

Sean:
That’s the oldest mistake there is.

She studies him carefully now.

Eljara:
So there’s no distance.

Sean:
No.

Eljara:
No safe perspective.

Sean:
No.

The movement across the chamber repeats again.

This time—

Eljara realizes she expected it.

Eljara:
I knew where it would move next.

Sean nods once.

Sean:
Yeah.

A pause.

Sean:
You live here now.

That lands cold.

Eljara:
That’s what happened to the Drukhari.

Sean exhales softly.

Sean:
At some point performance stopped being ritual.

A beat.

Sean:
And became environment.

Silence.

Eljara:
And the Imperium?

A small, tired smile.

Sean:
Calls the mask “duty.”

Eljara:
Chaos?

Sean:
Calls it freedom.

A pause.

Sean:
Same trap.

The chamber hums softly around them.

Predictable now.

Comforting.

Wrong.

Eljara:
Then what’s left?

Sean stands slowly.

Guitar hanging at his side.

Sean:
Choice.

She watches him carefully.

Eljara:
Even after it becomes normal?

He stops near the corridor ahead.

Not turning around.

Sean:
Especially then.

Silence.

Because anyone can choose once.

The hard part—

is choosing again after the nightmare becomes routine.

If this felt familiar —
that’s probably the point.

Some nightmares don’t end.
People just learn how to carry them.
