🜍 Mythveil Advent Calendar — Day 4 Eljara’s Offering for the Small Folk

You notice it only because Eljara tiptoes through the room
like someone carrying a secret too delicate for the floorboards.

She holds two plates.

One with cookies and warm milk.
The other with a single glass bauble
filled with seeds, crumbs, and tiny, crushed berries
that shimmer in the candlelight like winter dust.
Â
She opens the window.
Â
Cold air slips in — sharp, clean, watchful.
Â
Mara rubs her eyes, still half asleep.
Â
“Mmh… Eljara… why are you feeding the night?”
Â
Eljara smiles —
that soft, glowing smile she has
when she’s about to say something
that sounds like a dream
but feels like a rule older than winter.

“It’s not for the night,” she whispers.
“It’s for the little folk.”
Â
Mara blinks.
“The fairies?”
Â
Eljara shakes her head.
Â
“No… smaller.
Older.
The ones that fly between the eaves
so fast you only see the snow move after them.
Mama said you must never forget them
in the coldest week.
If they starve…
the wind gets angry.”

She places the plates on the frost-rimmed sill,
her breath blooming like silver mist.
Â
Somewhere outside,
something tiny rustles in the dark —
too quick
too light
too many wings.
Â
Mara shivers.
Â
“Eljara… do they really come?”
Â
Eljara nods.
Â
“They always come.
If you’re kind to them.”
She leans closer to the night,
her voice small and certain:
“And tonight… we need all the kindness we can give.”

Behind them,
the candles flicker once —
as if something unseen
just bowed in thanks.
Â
