🜍 BIRTH — WEEK 1 (Pulp Cthulhu1930s) Mara & Chibi The Egg That Waits

The ground is soft today.

Mara notices because her shoes sink a little when she walks.

Not much.

Just enough that the earth feels like it’s waking up.

Chibi pokes the mud with a stick.

“It’s breathing,” he says.

Mara tilts her head.

“Ground doesn’t breathe.”

Chibi shrugs.

“This one does.”

They sit beside the low stone wall behind the churchyard.

A wooden basket rests between them.

Inside it are eggs.

White ones.

Brown ones.

A few already painted with careful hands.

Mara rolls one gently across her palm.

“Why eggs?” she asks.

Chibi doesn’t look up from the mud.

“Because they’re quiet.”

“That’s not an answer.”

“It is if you think about it.”

A breeze moves across the field.

The smell of wet soil drifts through the air.

Somewhere a lamb bleats.

Chibi taps the egg with his finger.

“Everything starts in one of these,” he says.

Mara frowns.

“Not everything.”

“Most things.”

He holds the egg up to the light.

“It’s like a box.”

“A box?”

“Yeah.”

He rotates it slowly.

“A box with something waiting inside.”

Children laugh near the church steps.

Painted eggs roll across the stone.

Bright colors in the cold sunlight.

Mara watches them.

“Spring always feels happy,” she says.

Chibi lowers the egg.

“That’s because people forget winter.”

“No they don’t.”

“They do.”

He points toward the fields.

“Everything dies.”

Mara looks at the small green shoots pushing through the soil.

“And then it comes back.”

Chibi digs a shallow hole in the mud with his stick.

“What if something comes back wrong?”

Mara blinks.

“Wrong how?”

He thinks for a moment.

“Like… it remembers something we don’t.”

“That doesn’t make sense.”

“Sure it does.”

He presses the stick deeper into the soil.

“Maybe the ground remembers things.”

Mara looks toward the dark forest beyond the fields.

It still looks like winter there.

Cold.

Quiet.

“Trees don’t forget winter,” she says.

“No.”

“Animals don’t forget either.”

Chibi shakes his head.

“They just wait.”

He lifts the egg again.

“This is waiting too.”

“For what?”

“For the right day.”

Mara studies the shell.

Smooth.

Silent.

“What if the wrong day comes first?”

Chibi smiles faintly.

“Then something else hatches.”

The wind shifts.

For a moment the air smells colder.

Older.

Chibi notices.

“Soil did that again.”

“What?”

“Breathing.”

Mara presses her shoe into the ground.

It sinks a little deeper than before.

The church bell rings once.

Just once.

The sound carries across the fields.

Chibi sets the egg back into the basket.

“Do you think everything comes back in spring?” he asks.

Mara watches the forest again.

“I think things that know how do.”

“And the ones that don’t?”

She takes a long moment before answering.

“They stay where winter left them.”

Chibi nods slowly.

Then he looks at the basket again.

“Unless someone opens the egg.”
