The toys are still on the floor.
Not broken.
Not packed away.
Just untouched.
Mara sits against the wall, knees drawn close.
Chibi stands by the door, jacket already on. The hoodie doesn’t look oversized anymore. It’s been worn in.
Chibi:
Are we late?
Mara thinks.
Mara:
No.
Chibi:
Then why are we going?
She looks at the unfinished game.
Mara:
We’re not going.
Chibi frowns.
Chibi:
Then why does it feel like we are?
Outside, the city hums. Smooth. Efficient.
Mara:
There’s nothing left to waste.
Chibi sits down hard.
Chibi:
I liked wasting time.
Mara:
I know.
Chibi:
It didn’t hurt anyone.
Mara:
No.
Chibi:
So why does it feel wrong now?
Mara closes her eyes.
Mara:
Because everything costs something.
Chibi:
Even nothing?
Mara:
Especially nothing.
He looks around the room.
Chibi:
Are we bad at this?
Mara:
No.
Chibi:
Then why don’t they want it?
Mara chooses her words.
Mara:
Because it doesn’t help the numbers.
Chibi shakes his head.
Chibi:
I don’t like numbers.
Mara:
You don’t have to.
Chibi:
But they like me less if I don’t.
That lands.
Mara moves closer, shoulder touching his.
Mara:
They don’t like or dislike.
Chibi:
Then what do they do?
Mara:
They count.
He leans into her.
Chibi:
I don’t want to be counted.
Mara:
I know.
The lights outside switch on automatically.
Chibi:
Can we play later?
Mara looks at the toys one last time.
Mara:
Not here.
Chibi:
Anywhere?
She hesitates.
Mara:
We’ll see.
They step out together.
The room stays as it is.
Unused.
Uncounted.
There is simply no time left for it.
