Rauhnacht — Second Night Voice: Sean
I’ll tell you one.
And I’ll tell you where it comes from.
In Scotland, where I’m from,
the second night had a rule.
You don’t block a road.
Not a track.
Not a path.
Not a drove road through forest or hill.
My people didn’t call it superstition.
They called it sense.
Because during the dark nights —
what you call the Rauhnächte —
the roads don’t belong to the living alone.
In the old stories, they’re called
the Sluagh,
the restless dead,
moving low over the land,
following the old ways between places.
And the rule was simple:
If you block the way,
you mark yourself
as something that can be moved.
My grandfather wasn’t afraid of ghosts.
He was a mechanic.
He trusted engines, weight, friction.
But on those nights,
he never left a cart across a track.
Never stacked wood on a path.
Never parked where something might need to pass.
He said:
“The dead don’t stop.
And they don’t go around.”
I didn’t believe him.
Not at first.
Until one winter, a man near us
blocked an old forest road with his car.
Just for the night.
Snow was coming.
It seemed practical.
Nothing happened while we watched.
No storm.
No noise.
No howling.
In the morning, the car stood exactly where he left it.
Clean.
No snow on the roof.
No frost on the glass.
But the man never crossed a road again.
He could walk his fields.
Work his hands raw.
Live his life in small, careful circles.
But every time he reached a path —
any path —
he stopped.
As if something invisible
was still passing.
When he died years later,
they buried him facing away from the road.
Since then, I don’t block ways.
Not even briefly.
Not even when it would be easier.
Because in the old nights,
movement matters more than ownership.
