The path narrows.

The Dane Hills rise gently,
as if they don’t want to be accused of anything.
There used to be a cave here.
People say that carefully.
As if caves stop existing
when houses are built on top of them.
The earth still remembers.
You feel it under your boots —
a softness that shouldn’t be there.
Not mud.
Not rot.
Space.
Black Annis never appears all at once.
She is the cold between branches.
The shadow that doesn’t belong to the tree that casts it.
The pause where birds decide not to sing.
They told children she had iron claws.
That she wore their skins.
That she ate what wandered too far.
Those stories were for people who needed monsters.
Black Annis doesn’t chase.
She waits.
You see her marks first.
