(The village well stands quietly at the edge of the green. Resting on the old stone rim is a small piece of fresh bread.)

Maybe somebody dropped it.

Mara

Nobody drops bread that neatly.

(A pause.)

Chibi

Mara

My grandmother used to talk about this.

The stories again.

Mara

Yes.

(She keeps staring at the bread.)

She said people used to leave gifts.

Chibi

For who?

(A silence.)

Mara

That’s the strange part.

Nobody knew.

Chibi

That sounds like a terrible system.

Mara

I know.

(The old well creaks softly.)

Mara

Bread.

Milk.

Flowers.

Coins.

Chibi

Why?

Mara

Because their parents did.

And their parents before them.

Chibi

That’s not a reason.

Mara

Exactly.

(The answer hangs in the warm air.)

Do people still do it?

Mara

Apparently.

(She points to the bread.)

Chibi

One person isn’t people.

Mara

Maybe they’re the last one.

Chibi

The last what?

Mara

The last person who remembers.

(Neither child speaks.)

Chibi

Remembers what?

Mara

I don’t know.

That’s what bothers me.

(The fields whisper in the distance.)

Maybe people stopped because nothing happened.

Mara

Maybe.

Chibi

Maybe that’s how you know a superstition isn’t real.

(A long silence.)

Mara

Or maybe that’s how long it takes to notice.

Chibi

Notice what?

(Mara looks toward the dark woods beyond the fields.)

Mara

That something stopped coming.

(The answer lingers.)

Chibi

Wouldn’t that be good?

Mara

Maybe.

(A pause.)

Mara

Unless it was supposed to.

(The well creaks softly in the wind.)

Chibi

Do you think someone will come for it?

Mara

No.

Chibi

No?

Mara

I think someone already did.
