🜁 Pulp Cthulhu: By Gaslight When the Mask Slips

Caelwyn

Victorian society believed something very comforting.

That civilization was permanent.

That once humanity reached refinement, discipline, and order…

we would remain there.

Stacy

Which was always an illusion.

Civilization isn’t a stable condition.

It’s a performance.

A continuous act of restraint.

Caelwyn

Exactly.

Every gesture regulated.

Every emotion moderated.

Every impulse suppressed beneath manners and etiquette.

Stacy

But Darwin changed that picture.

He showed that humanity is not a finished creation.

We are part of a biological process.

An organism shaped by instincts far older than civilization.

Caelwyn

Which means the Victorian gentleman…

and the primitive creature beneath him…

are not separate beings.

Stacy

Only separated by control.

Caelwyn

And control is fragile.

Stacy

Very fragile.

It fails in moments everyone recognizes.

A sudden burst of anger.

An impulsive decision.

Words spoken before thought has time to intervene.

Caelwyn

Moments where emotion outruns discipline.

Stacy

The Victorians interpreted those moments morally.

Sin.

Weakness.

Failure of character.

Caelwyn

But biology tells a different story.

The human nervous system is not perfectly rational.

Emotion moves faster than thought.

Impulse moves faster than reason.

Stacy

Especially in spring.

Caelwyn

You noticed the pattern as well?

Stacy

Of course.

Longer daylight alters hormonal cycles.

Temperature changes behavior.

Seasonal shifts affect mood and impulse control.

The entire biosphere accelerates.

Caelwyn

Which means the pressure on human restraint increases.

Stacy

Exactly.

Spring strengthens life.

But it also strengthens instinct.

Caelwyn

And instinct doesn’t care about Victorian etiquette.

Stacy

No.

Instinct is older than civilization.

Older than cities.

Older than language.

Caelwyn

So what Victorian society called moral weakness…

may actually be something structural.

Stacy

A temporary loss of synchronization between reason and instinct.

Caelwyn

A crack in the mask.

Stacy

Yes.

A very small one.

Usually lasting only seconds.

Caelwyn

But if there are forces in the world that respond to instinct…

to emotion…

to the raw biological energy of life…

those moments would be very interesting.

Stacy

Because they create resonance.

Caelwyn

Resonance?

Stacy

A moment when the disciplined structure of the mind slips.

When impulse becomes louder than reason.

When instinct briefly takes control.

Caelwyn

And something might notice.

Stacy

Perhaps.

Not possession.

Not transformation.

Caelwyn

Amplification.

Stacy

Exactly.

A whisper of anger becoming rage.

A moment of fear becoming panic.

A passing impulse becoming obsession.

Caelwyn

Then the Victorian belief in perfect self-control…

Stacy

Was never entirely true.

Caelwyn

Civilization was never a fortress.

Stacy

No.

Just a mask.

Caelwyn

And spring…

Stacy

Spring is when the mask slips.
