🜍 BIRTH — WEEK 2 (Pulp Cthulhu 1930s) Mara & Chibi The Dead Who Were Still Busy

The orchard is quiet.

Spring is trying to arrive.

Tiny buds are growing along the branches, but the trees still look like winter if you don’t look closely.

Mara sits on the low stone wall, swinging her feet.

Chibi lies in the grass beside her, staring at the sky.

“Do zombies get tired?” Mara asks.

Chibi doesn’t look away from the clouds.

“I don’t think so.”

Mara thinks about that.

“That seems unfair.”

“Why?”

“Because working without rest is horrible.”

Chibi nods.

“Yes.”

“It is.”

A breeze moves through the orchard.

The branches creak softly.

Mara watches the buds tremble.

“Trees wake up in spring,” she says.

“Yes.”

“Animals wake up too.”

“Yes.”

She looks toward the distant fields.

“But that man yesterday didn’t wake up.”

Chibi turns his head slightly.

“No.”

“He was already awake.”

Mara frowns.

“That’s not what I mean.”

“I know.”

He rolls onto his side and looks toward the forest.

“He wasn’t alive.”

The wind carries the smell of damp soil.

Mara wrinkles her nose slightly.

“Why was he digging?”

Chibi shrugs.

“Because someone told him to.”

“But he was dead.”

“Yes.”

“That should stop you from working.”

Chibi smiles faintly.

“Normally it does.”

Mara studies the dirt path beside the wall.

“So zombies don’t decide things?”

“No.”

“They just obey?”

“Yes.”

“Like puppets?”

“Something like that.”

A crow lands on the fence nearby.

Watching them.

Its head tilts curiously.

Mara notices.

“Do you think he knew he was dead?”

Chibi thinks about that longer.

“I hope not.”

“Why?”

“Because that would be worse.”

Mara nods slowly.

“Yes.”

“That would be lonely.”

The crow suddenly flaps away.

The orchard grows quiet again.

Mara watches the branches move in the wind.

“Spring is supposed to bring life back,” she says.

“Yes.”

“But necromancy doesn’t bring life.”

“No.”

“What does it bring?”

Chibi sits up.

He picks up a stick and draws a small circle in the dirt.

“Work.”

Mara leans forward.

“Work?”

“Yes.”

He draws a second circle.

“When something dies…”

“It stops.”

“Yes.”

“That’s the rule.”

He scratches a line through the circle.

“Necromancy breaks the rule.”

Mara watches the drawing carefully.

“So the dead person has to keep going?”

“Yes.”

“Even if they’re finished?”

“Yes.”

The wind grows slightly warmer.

The smell of flowers drifts through the orchard.

Spring is definitely arriving now.

Mara looks toward the fields again.

“Do you think the man is still digging?”

Chibi shakes his head.

“No.”

“Why not?”

“Because they buried the charm.”

Mara smiles faintly.

“That was nice of them.”

Chibi nods.

“Yes.”

“Everyone deserves to stop working eventually.”

They sit quietly for a moment.

Watching the orchard slowly wake up.

Birds returning.

Branches stretching toward the sun.

Mara speaks softly.

“I like spring.”

“Me too.”

“Because things come back.”

“Yes.”

She looks toward the forest again.

“But only the things that want to.”
