You notice it only because the snow stops obeying gravity.
It doesn’t fall tonight—
it flares,
tiny jerks of white
as if something beneath the drifts
is breathing too close to the surface.

Your footsteps make no sound.
The cold clings to your ankles
like hands that forgot how to let go.
And then you hear it—
not a bleat,
not a scream,
but the awful in-between sound
of a throat deciding
which shape to take.

The trees bend away from the trail.
Even the forest wants nothing to do
with what’s coming.

You see her only when she wants you to:
a silhouette rising out of the snow
as if the mountain itself
coughed her up.
Long, wrong-bent legs.
A goat’s skull with eyes that should not glow.
A jaw that opens sideways—
too curious,
too hungry,
too human.

She follows your footprints,
but not the way animals do.
She steps inside them,
one by one,
as if borrowing your path
to learn your pulse.

You try to run.
The snow sinks with you,
softening, shifting,
helping her.

Her breath reaches your neck—
hot, rotten,
sweet in the way old barns are sweet
when something inside has been eating too long.

They say the Habergeiß hunts the greedy,
the wasteful,
the ones who walk alone when the year turns dark.
But tonight she isn’t choosing by sin.
She is choosing by sound—
the rhythm of your heartbeat in the cold.

At dawn they find the trail.
Your prints end abruptly.
Beside them:
deep, cloven impressions
and one long groove
as if something dragged a warm body
into the white.

❓ If the Habergeiß stepped into your footprints
and pressed her skull against your breath—
would you run,
or would you freeze before she chose which part of you to take?
